My friend James Peterman and I collaborated on an effigy dagger recently. I carved the Iroquois warrior handle out of ebony and inlaid a buffalo nickel as a peace medal. James made the dagger blade of 5160, leaving hammer marks down the center to go with the rustic theme. OAL is 15 3/4 inches. Blade length is 9 1/2 inches. I have to decide what to do as far as sheath now. Hope everyone likes it. Photos leave a little to be desired as far as seeing details of the carving.
haha, yes its cool I like the carving, and I'm curious to how the smith got those sorts of hammer marks, They don't look like the ones I typically end up with
Thanks, Kenon. I am not sure what James did to achieve the look. And I don't know if he is on this forum to answer. Whatever the case, I'm happy with the overall result. It's a big hefty piece, almost like a frontier gladius-type knife/short sword. I'm 6'5", so I tell everyone it is built to scale.
Glad you like it John. The blade came out a little heavier than what I would normally do. Still tho it came out nice.
To get the texture I used a chipping hammer. Forge the blade to shape and the worked it over good down the center with both the point and chisel sides of the hammer.
Woulda commented sooner but this 3rd shifts been beaing on me this week.
